Be Young Essential Oils
(Boswellia frereana birdwood, fam. burseraceae) According to secondary sources, historical uses of Boswellia include well-being, skin disorders, infections, wound healing, and varicosities, as well as rheumatic diseases, menstrual disorders, and bruises. Cosmetically, it has been recommended as a facial toner and to smooth wrinkles.
Recent interest in the use of Boswellia for inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and asthma, stems from scientific reports that Boswellia inhibits leukotriene synthesis. In addition to anti-inflammatory activity, in vitro and in vivo research has shown that extracts of Boswellia species exert anticarcinogenic, antiproliferative, antitumor, apoptotic, and cytostatic activity.
However, although there is strong evidence in human research in support of Boswellia for osteoarthritis, and good evidence in support of its use for asthma and swelling in individuals with brain tumors, adequate evidence is lacking for other clinical uses.
